Inglaterra, II Guerra Mundial. Sarah Miles (Deborah Kerr) es la aburrida esposa de un funcionario británico. Cuando, durante una fiesta, su marido le presenta al escritor americano Maurice Bendrix (Van Jonson), Sarah no puede evitar sentirse atraída por él. Entre ambos nace un amor apasionado que los lleva a soñar con un futuro común, pero, inexplicablemente, Sarah pone fin a la relación.
